August Burns Red Founded In 2003 All Members Were Attending High School

August Burns Red an American metalcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, formed in 2003. The band’s lineup of guitarists John Benjamin “JB” Brubaker and Brent Rambler, drummer Matt Greiner, lead vocalist Jake Luhrs and bassist Dustin Davidson has remained consistent since 2006. The band was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 for Best Metal Performance for the song “Identity” from its 2015 release Found in Far Away Places, and again in 2018 for “Invisible Enemy” from Phantom Anthem (2017).

For their 10th album, Pennsylvania metalcore mavens August Burns Red deliver a dynamic collection of songs peppered with special guests. Tech-heavy opener “Legions” features guest vocals from Mike Hranica of Ohio metalcore veterans The Devil Wears Prada. The Meshuggah-esque “Sonic Salvation” includes a guest shot from Jamie Hails of Aussie metalcore squad Polaris.

“Cerebral Malfunction” shifts through several movements, including a highly melodic guitar solo and angelic backing vocals from members of Make Them Suffer. Meanwhile, lead single “Behemoth” boasts back-to-back breakdowns and—in what may be a nod to vocalist Jake Luhrs’ Christian beliefs—lyrics about abandoning old ways in order to be reborn.
