It all started with perfume. Tony Iommi was working on instrumental tracks for Xerjoff, the luxury fragrance brand, when he decided to write a new album. The Italian perfume house was producing two new scents in collaboration with Black Sabbath\u2019s legendary guitarist: the Tony Iommi Monkey Special and Tony Iommi Deified. The music would appear in ads for the cologne, in which Xerjoff founder Sergio Momo would be playing guitar alongside the master. \u201cI thought I\u2019d do an album of instrumentals,\u201d Iommi tells Apple Music. \u201cAfter I did three or four, I changed my mind. I wanted to do a vocal album with a full band.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is From the Dark, a classic-sounding heavy metal album featuring Norwegian vocalist J\u00f8rn Lande, Mercyful Fate bassist Becky Baldwin, and Robbie Williams\u2019 drummer Karl Brazil. Iommi first joined forces with Lande in 2010 at the High Voltage Festival in London, where the singer joined him, Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, Dio\/Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, and former Sabs\/Deep Purple singer Glenn Hughes for a special tribute to former Sabbath\/Heaven & Hell vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who had passed a couple of months prior. \u201cI like his voice, I like his approach, and he\u2019s a nice guy,\u201d Iommi says of Lande. \u201cIt was a no-brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same year, Lande recorded and released a Dio tribute album, appropriately titled Dio. It comes as no surprise, then, that From the Dark harkens back to Sabbath\u2019s electrifying Dio era, which produced the revered albums Heaven and Hell (1980) and Mob Rules (1981). \u201cJ\u00f8rn sings very much in the same style as Ronnie,\u201d Iommi says. \u201cHe\u2019s got the same sort of aggression, and that\u2019s what I really liked about him. And he\u2019s not copying Ronnie; it\u2019s just the way he is. That\u2019s his voice. That\u2019s his approach. He really knows how to put things over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lande wrote his own lyrics for the record, which was Iommi\u2019s intent from the start. \u201cI believe it\u2019s best to leave the singer to do his thing,\u201d Iommi says. \u201cOtherwise, it\u2019d be like him telling me what to play on guitar. He knows what his capabilities are and what he\u2019s singing about, and that\u2019s what I wanted. I wanted him to be able to really put the passion into it instead of singing somebody else\u2019s lyrics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The heavy and infectious \u201cWorld Alone\u201d was released as the first single, which sounds a bit like Sabbath\u2019s \u201cThe Mob Rules.\u201d \u201cI\u2019d think it would, because I wrote \u2018The Mob Rules,\u2019 and it\u2019s the same style of playing and approach,\u201d Iommi says. \u201cIt\u2019s an uptempo one, and a bit of a shorter track when compared to some of the others. And it\u2019s more, I suppose, instant. As soon as you hear it, it\u2019s up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iommi says his favorite track is album closer \u201cLegacy,\u201d a doomy track that sees Lande channeling Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale with lyrics written about Iommi himself. \u201cI didn\u2019t know that until he mentioned it in an interview,\u201d the guitarist says. \u201cBut that\u2019s not why I like it. I just like the feel of it, and it has some nice movements.\u201d<\/p>\n
