The pitch: \u201cIt\u2019s the biggest album I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d That\u2019s a bold statement coming from superstar Luke Combs, who\u2019s never been known to shy away from big, whether it\u2019s a sound, a song, or, of course, his larger-than-life voice. But for this sixth studio album, he wanted to give fans something they could really dig into, citing 2024\u2019s Fathers & Sons as something of a creative detour and The Way I Am as a return to form. He also did it for himself. \u201cMy decisions have always come down to happiness,\u201d he tells Apple Music\u2019s Zane Lowe. \u201cObviously, it’s great to be successful and have money and have all these things, but what it really buys you is the ability to have this freedom and live the life that you want to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story: At an ambitious but still carefully curated 22 tracks, The Way I Am is rich and layered, and rewards repeated listens. With one lone feature\u2014bluegrass legend Alison Krauss, no less, on standout cut \u201cEver Mine\u201d\u2014The Way I Am is a showcase for the sensibilities Combs has honed since debuting nearly a decade ago. His songwriting shines on highlights like \u201cDays Like These,\u201d a co-write with Brent Cobb and Aaron Raitiere that distills a philosophy of love and gratitude into a deceptively simple lyric. Conversely, songs like the smash hit \u201cBe By You\u201d and the album\u2019s title track are reminders that Combs is also masterful at choosing outside cuts.<\/p>\n

Focus track: \u201c\u2018The Way I Am\u2019 is the one that I would say, if I had to pick a favorite,\u201d Combs says. \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t write that song\u2014it was my buddy Rob Snyder, who I wrote \u2018She Got the Best of Me\u2019 with years ago. I\u2019m jealous. It\u2019s one of those things where you hear it and you\u2019re like, \u2018Damn, I wish I could say I wrote that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The last word: \u201cI\u2019m at this point where you just have to believe in it,\u201d he says. \u201cYou have to believe in the thing that you\u2019ve worked hard on and believe in your team. It\u2019s me on the cover, but there could be 70 people on the front of that album too.\u201d<\/p>\n
