After releasing their fourth album Surrender in 2021, R\u00dcF\u00dcS DU SOL declared it \u201cthe end of a chapter for us as a unit.\u201d After years of living in their adopted hometown of LA, its members (Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt) relocated to Encinitas and Miami. As the group crafted Inhale \/ Exhale over the next two years, the physical separation required them to carve out time for joint writing sessions, where they reconvened in places such as LA, Austin, and Ibiza. \u201cWe really made the most of those two-week stints,\u201d George tells Apple Music\u2019s Zane Lowe. \u201cWe were in a really good creative flow. We were reconnecting and particularly reconnecting in the studio more than ever.\u201c<\/p>\n

When \u201cMusic Is Better,\u201d the album\u2019s lead single, arrived in June 2024, it marked R\u00dcF\u00dcS DU SOL\u2019s triumphant return. Its joyful chorus\u2014\u201cMusic is better when we\u2019re together\u201d\u2014seems as much a love song as it is a celebration of the creative magic they find when sharing a physical space. Those feelings of joy, love, and gratitude run throughout Inhale \/ Exhale, a lighter turn from its predecessor\u2019s darker and more introspective themes. A new relationship sparks promise \u201cburning as bright as the sun\u201d on opening track \u201cInhale,\u201d while love\u2019s stars align on \u201cIn the Moment\u201d and the mood slinks towards carnal on \u201cLevitating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mirroring their nomadic creative process, R\u00dcF\u00dcS DU SOL covers more sonic ground outside of soaring melodic house. \u201cThe Life\u201d transports them to colder climes through rumbling bass and crisp percussion, followed by the fuzzing rock edge of \u201cPressure,\u201d and \u201cEdge of the Earth\u201d pulls from driving trance. There are quiet moments, too, on the reflective \u201cNew York,\u201d where the sparse drums resemble a heartbeat, and the ambient \u201cExhale,\u201d where digitized vocal harmonies offer the album\u2019s serene exit. \u201cWe\u2019ve been pushing the boundaries of what the expressions of our music looks like, trying different tempos, trying different beat expressions, things that are beatless,\u201d Hunt says. \u201cAnd so I feel like this album that we\u2019ve created is way more dynamic and it reflects that we\u2019re more liberated.\u201d<\/p>\n
