\u201cWill you listen?\u201d Sleep Token vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Vessel asks on \u201cLook to Windward,\u201d the opening track from the band\u2019s fourth album. Once again, the masked British phenoms seamlessly blend genres as the song goes from Kid A-era Radiohead to modern R&B to cinematic strings to an explosive metal riff. By now, fans have come to expect these kinds of dramatic shifts from the anonymous group, but Even in Arcadia isn\u2019t just more of the same. It\u2019s an expansion, the widening of an already impressive palette.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmergence\u201d offers the gospel refrain \u201cGo ahead and wrap your arms around me\u201d before Vessel raps over a loop of a trilling guitar and then weaves in and out of a beefy nu metal riff. \u201cDangerous\u201d is probably the closest Sleep Token has come to pure Deftones, a band they\u2019ve referenced, sonically and melodically, on previous albums. \u201cPast Self\u201d takes a more straight-ahead R&B approach, but with a vocal melody that echoes back on itself to create a disorienting stereo effect.<\/p>\n

Melancholy single \u201cDamocles\u201d references classic Greek mythology and seems to address Vessel\u2019s personal struggles with fame and staying anonymous: \u201cNobody told me I\u2019d get tired of myself\/When it all looks like heaven, but it feels like hell.\u201d \u201cCaramel\u201d might have a similar theme (\u201cWear me out like Prada, devil in my detail,\u201d Vessel sings), but does it with a syncopated xylophone rhythm that drops into another Chino Moreno-like vocal melody over a tsunami of distorted guitars and a purgative nu metal beatdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cProvider\u201d channels neo-soul master D\u2019Angelo as Vessel manages to rhyme \u201cICU\u201d with \u201cI see you\u201d before the full-metal bridge kicks in. Closer \u201cInfinite Baths\u201d unfurls like an extended meditation in the eye of the storm until the inevitable screaming metal barrage\u2014the longest and most ferocious on the album\u2014takes over. And then it fades into the shadows again, just like the band itself.<\/p>\n
