The first time ROS\u00c9 was interviewed about her debut solo album, she burst into tears. \u201cI ended up crying for the whole 30 minutes,\u201d the K-pop singer recounts to Apple Music\u2019s Zane Lowe. \u201cIt was not a smooth ride, and it just showed how much time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

ROS\u00c9 was born in New Zealand to Korean parents and raised in Australia, shooting to global fame in 2016 as one-fourth of the mega-successful girl group BLACKPINK.<\/p>\n

The 12-track rosie, which is what she\u2019s called by her friends and loved ones, is, as she says, both a \u201ctime capsule\u201d and a \u201ctherapy session\u201d\u2014a raw chronicle of her twenties as she\u2019s still experiencing them, and an opportunity to be more personal than K-pop artists often get to be. \u201cIt’s just what I talk about with my friends and family, put into an album so that we can all share it and hopefully my fans feel closer to me,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

On \u201ctoxic till the end,\u201d the singer makes a clear mid-track announcement\u2014\u201cLadies and gentlemen\/I present to you the ex\u201d\u2014before getting even more vulnerable with the world: \u201cI\u2019ll never forgive you for one thing, my dear\/You wasted my prettiest years.\u201d<\/p>\n

While much of rosie explores the complexities of romantic heartbreak, ROS\u00c9 also delves into other, lighter subjects. \u201cAPT.,\u201d a collaboration with Bruno Mars, gets its name from a popular Korean drinking game ROS\u00c9 played in her early twenties. The infinitely energetic pop-rock track shot to the top of the global pop charts upon its release, ushering in rosie along with the subsequent pre-release track \u201cnumber one girl,\u201d co-written and co-produced by Mars.<\/p>\n

In the latter, ROS\u00c9 recounts the emotional spiral brought about by a night spent scrolling through social media judgments. Though the pop piano ballad is about superstardom (\u201cTell me that I\u2019m special\/Tell me I look pretty\/Tell me I\u2019m a little angel\/Sweetheart of your city\u201d), it also \u201crepresents every toxic relationship,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

While long work hours and a life in the public eye may weigh on ROS\u00c9, as evidenced by some of rosie\u2019s most visceral moments, music is another one of ROS\u00c9\u2019s love stories. \u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s what I love to do,\u201d she says, \u201cand that\u2019s the only thing that makes me feel alive and a person.\u201d<\/p>\n
