Looking at the stats, you\u2019d think Megan Thee Stallion was on top of the world: \u201cHISS,\u201d the second single from her third studio album, was her first solo chart-topper. But as the silver-tongued Houston native has risen from cult-favorite Instagram freestyler to full-fledged cultural force after breaking through with 2019\u2019s \u201cHot Girl Summer,\u201d the rapper\u2019s been weighed down by grief and betrayal, all highly public and intensely scrutinized.<\/p>\n

On 2022\u2019s Traumazine, Megan began to let down her guard and open up about her pain. She teased its follow-up in late 2023 with a statement: \u201cJust as a snake sheds its skin, we must shed our past, over and over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

On MEGAN, she\u2019s still going through it, but she\u2019s not going down without a fight. The motif of the snake, coiled and waiting to strike, winds its way through MEGAN\u2019s 18 tracks with cool, collected menace.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s got devastating burns for everybody within earshot on \u201cRattle,\u201d snapping at an unnamed peer, \u201cYour life must be boring as fuck if you still reminiscing \u2019bout shit that we did.\u201d (Her claim to be \u201ca motherfuckin\u2019 brat, not a Barbie\u201d on \u201cFigueroa\u201d might clarify its intended target.)<\/p>\n

There are moments of levity: \u201cOtaku Hot Girl\u201d flexes her arcane anime knowledge, while \u201cAccent\u201d recruits Hot Girl Summer tourmate GloRilla for a country-girl ode to being \u201cthicker than a Popeye\u2019s biscuit.\u201d But you get the sense that for Megan, it\u2019s awfully lonely at the top: On \u201cMoody Girl,\u201d she switches her trademark tagline to \u201creal motherfuckin\u2019 sad girl shit.\u201d And over the metalcore guitar chug driving \u201cCOBRA,\u201d she tells you how it feels to break down while the world is watching.<\/p>\n
