If Donald Trump tried to use her music, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4438048-the-memo-the-politicization-of-taylor-swift\/\">Taylor Swift would likely do it, too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Many musicians have said \u201cno\u201d when politicians try using their music for campaigning. But Bruce Springsteen may be the most famous naysayer of all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In September 1984, Springsteen\u2019s \u201cBorn in the U.S.A.\u201d was atop the charts, and Ronald Reagan, running for reelection against Walter Mondale, told a New Jersey audience that he and the singer-songwriter shared the same American dream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Springsteen disagreed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Three days later, performing in Pittsburgh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2017\/07\/22\/the-bruce-springsteen-concert-that-sparked-a-political-firestorm-in-reagans-america\/\">Springsteen spoke<\/a> about his version of that dream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cIn the beginning, the idea was we all live here a little bit like a family where the strong can help the weak ones, the rich can help the poor ones. You know, the American dream,\u201d he said in between songs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think it was that everybody was going to make a billion dollars but that everybody was going to have an opportunity and a chance to live a life with some decency and some dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">June 4, 2024, marks the 40th anniversary of \u201cBorn in the U.S.A.,\u201d Springsteen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bestsellingalbums.org\/artist\/1863\">top-selling album<\/a>. Just look at <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn-p.smehost.net\/sites\/e8622626f9584d40b1a8fce8dfa6f567\/wp-content\/uploads\/1984\/06\/springsteen-born-in-usa-back.jpg\">the album\u2019s cover art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Shot from the rear, Springsteen is facing a huge American flag. Springsteen\u2019s gruff rasp can make it difficult to hear the lyrics, which express the anguish of a Vietnam vet who regrets enlisting and faces unemployment at home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Yet the song\u2019s chorus, which Springsteen sings proudly and loudly, fist in the air, repeats \u201cBorn in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Springsteen was doing two things: criticizing the war and subsequent treatment of veterans and affirming his American birthright. The song was, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/29072594-born-to-run\">in his words<\/a>, \u201ca demand for a \u2018critical\u2019 patriotic voice along with pride of birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5589\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/streamapse.com\/TicketStream\/?p=456\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5589\" src=\"http:\/\/streamapse.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bruce-Springsteen-Tickets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/streamapse.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bruce-Springsteen-Tickets.jpg 600w, http:\/\/streamapse.com\/Magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Bruce-Springsteen-Tickets-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Courtesy Of Ticketnetwork<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/streamapse.com\/TicketStream\/?p=456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SEE THE &#8216;BOSS&#8217; BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIVE IN CONCERT<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Human touch<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">But its message eluded many listeners, including conservative columnist George Will, whose wife had been given two tickets to a concert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Afterward, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1984\/09\/13\/bruce-springsteens-usa\/f6502baa-a8eb-48ad-ba85-7fa848d8833e\/\">Will told his Washington Post readers<\/a> that Springsteen \u201cis no whiner, and the recitation of closed factories and other problems always seems punctuated by a grand, cheerful affirmation: \u2018Born in the U.S.A.!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Will, a favorite of the Reagan\u2019s inner circle, was the likely source for the president\u2019s mistaken view that he and Springsteen shared the same American dream.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Springsteen wrote about everyday people: bus drivers, factory workers, waitresses and cops. Reagan needed their votes, but not all of them were his people. His fiscal policies benefited wealthy Americans and corporations <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8500951\/\">but did little<\/a> for working families and the poor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Springsteen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-rolling-stone-interview-bruce-springsteen-on-born-in-the-u-s-a-184690\/\">said as much in a Rolling Stone interview<\/a> at the end of 1984: \u201cAnd you see the Reagan reelection ads on TV \u2013 you know: \u2018It\u2019s morning in America.\u2019 And you say, well, it\u2019s not morning in Pittsburgh. It\u2019s not morning above 125th Street in New York. It\u2019s midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In that same interview, Springsteen admitted that he last voted in 1972, when his candidate, George McGovern, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1972\/11\/09\/archives\/new-jersey-pages-president-won-49-states-and-521-electoral-votes.html\">lost to Republican incumbent Richard Nixon<\/a>. His preference, he said, was \u201chuman politics\u201d \u2013 concrete action with a direct effect on local communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">He put that into practice at the Pittsburgh concert following Reagan\u2019s shout-out. <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/bruce-springsteen-discusses-political-activism-in-advance-of-tribute-concert\/\">Making a US$10,000 donation<\/a> to a food bank for unemployed steelworkers, he urged his audience to also support the cause. Its people stand together even \u2013 especially \u2013 amid tragedy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Before Reagan cited him as a Republican muse, Springsteen was content to let his music convey his politics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Afterward, he was more candid, <a href=\"https:\/\/whats4dinnersolutions.com\/2016\/09\/23\/nobody-wins-unless-everybody-wins-bruce-springsteen\/\">often riffing on a favorite phrase<\/a>, \u201cNobody wins, unless everybody wins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In 2004, he jumped into electoral politics, supporting John Kerry\u2019s presidential bid. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2004\/10\/28\/kerry_springsteen\/\">At a large Midwest rally<\/a>, he warned that the ideals championed in his music were at risk, \u201c\u2018United We Stand\u2019 \u2026 and \u2018one nation indivisible\u2019 aren\u2019t just slogans. They need to remain the guiding principles of our public life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Four years later, Springsteen campaigned for Barack Obama and again in 2012. But this time, the candidate wasn\u2019t praising the Garden State troubadour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">He called Springsteen a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/1789435902176932279\">wacko<\/a>,\u201d before claiming that the Boss and other \u201cliberal singers\u201d had nonetheless voted for him in 2020.
