The band is known for its eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, <a title=\"Blues\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blues\">blues<\/a>, <a title=\"Jazz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jazz\">jazz<\/a>, <a title=\"Folk music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Folk_music\">folk<\/a>, <a title=\"Country music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Country_music\">country<\/a>, <a title=\"Bluegrass music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bluegrass_music\">bluegrass<\/a>, <a title=\"Rock and roll\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_and_roll\">rock and roll<\/a>, <a title=\"Gospel music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gospel_music\">gospel<\/a>, <a title=\"Reggae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reggae\">reggae<\/a>, and <a title=\"World music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_music\">world music<\/a> with <a title=\"Psychedelic music\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychedelic_music\">psychedelia<\/a>, the <a title=\"Musical improvisation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Musical_improvisation\">improvisation<\/a> of their <a title=\"Concert\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concert\">live performances<\/a>, and its devoted fan base, known as &#8220;<a title=\"Deadhead\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deadhead\">Deadheads<\/a>&#8220;. According to the musician and writer <a title=\"Lenny Kaye\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenny_Kaye\">Lenny Kaye<\/a>, the band&#8217;s music &#8220;touches on ground that most other groups don&#8217;t even know exists.&#8221; For the range of their influences and the structure of their live performances, Grateful Dead are considered &#8220;the pioneering godfathers of the <a title=\"Jam band\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jam_band\">jam band<\/a> world&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Grateful Dead was founded in the <a title=\"San Francisco Bay Area\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco_Bay_Area\">San Francisco Bay Area<\/a> during the rise of the <a title=\"Counterculture of the 1960s\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Counterculture_of_the_1960s\">counterculture of the 1960s<\/a>. The band&#8217;s founding members were <a title=\"Jerry Garcia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_Garcia\">Jerry Garcia<\/a> (<a title=\"Electric guitar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_guitar\">lead guitar<\/a> and vocals), <a title=\"Bob Weir\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Weir\">Bob Weir<\/a> (rhythm guitar and vocals), <a title=\"Ron &quot;Pigpen&quot; McKernan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_%22Pigpen%22_McKernan\">Ron &#8220;Pigpen&#8221; McKernan<\/a> (<a title=\"Keyboard instrument\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keyboard_instrument\">keyboards<\/a>, <a title=\"Harmonica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harmonica\">harmonica<\/a>, and vocals), <a title=\"Phil Lesh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phil_Lesh\">Phil Lesh<\/a> (<a title=\"Bass guitar\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bass_guitar\">bass guitar<\/a> and vocals), and <a title=\"Bill Kreutzmann\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Kreutzmann\">Bill Kreutzmann<\/a> (<a title=\"Drum kit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drum_kit\">drums<\/a>). Members of Grateful Dead, originally known as the Warlocks, had played together in various Bay Area ensembles, including the traditional <a title=\"Jug band\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jug_band\">jug band<\/a> Mother McCree&#8217;s Uptown Jug Champions. Lesh was the last member to join the Warlocks before they changed their name to Grateful Dead, replacing Dana Morgan Jr., who had played bass for a few gigs. Drummer <a title=\"Mickey Hart\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mickey_Hart\">Mickey Hart<\/a> and non-performing lyricist <a title=\"Robert Hunter (lyricist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Hunter_(lyricist)\">Robert Hunter<\/a> joined in 1967. With the exception of McKernan, who died in 1973, and Hart, who took time off from 1971 to 1974, the core of the band stayed together for its entire 30-year history. Other official members of the band included <a title=\"Tom Constanten\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Constanten\">Tom Constanten<\/a> (keyboards from 1968 to 1970), <a title=\"John Perry Barlow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Perry_Barlow\">John Perry Barlow<\/a> (non-performing lyricist from 1971 to 1995), <a title=\"Keith Godchaux\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keith_Godchaux\">Keith Godchaux<\/a> (keyboards and occasional vocals from 1971 to 1979), <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Donna Godchaux\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donna_Godchaux\">Donna Godchaux<\/a> (vocals from 1972 to 1979), <a title=\"Brent Mydland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brent_Mydland\">Brent Mydland<\/a> (keyboards and vocals from 1979 to 1990), and <a title=\"Vince Welnick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vince_Welnick\">Vince Welnick<\/a> (keyboards and vocals from 1990 to 1995).<sup id=\"cite_ref-Dead.net-band_15-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> <a title=\"Bruce Hornsby\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_Hornsby\">Bruce Hornsby<\/a> (accordion, piano, vocals) was a <a title=\"Concert tour\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concert_tour\">touring<\/a> member from 1990 to 1992, as well as a guest with the band on occasion before and after the tours.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>From the psychedelic firestorm of Anthem of the Sun to the pioneering folk rock of Workingman&#8217;s Dead, The Grateful Dead recorded many classic studio albums. But they truly came alive onstage, inspiring generations of Deadheads to join their musical caravan. Formed in 1965, the group were a crucial part of San Francisco&#8217;s hippie Summer of Love, but they were equally at home playing blues, country, and jazz. In 2015, the four surviving core members marked the band&#8217;s 50th anniversary in a <a title=\"Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fare_Thee_Well:_Celebrating_50_Years_of_the_Grateful_Dead\">series of concerts<\/a> that were billed as their last performances together.<sup id=\"cite_ref-dead50_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> There have also been several spin-offs featuring one or more core members, such as <a title=\"Dead &amp; Company\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dead_%26_Company\">Dead &amp; Company<\/a>, <a title=\"Furthur (band)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Furthur_(band)\">Furthur<\/a>, the <a title=\"Rhythm Devils\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhythm_Devils\">Rhythm Devils<\/a>, <a title=\"Phil Lesh and Friends\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phil_Lesh_and_Friends\">Phil Lesh and Friends<\/a>, <a title=\"RatDog\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RatDog\">RatDog<\/a>, and <a title=\"Billy &amp; the Kids\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billy_%26_the_Kids\">Billy &amp; the Kids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having only one top-40 single in their 30-year career, &#8220;<a title=\"Touch of Grey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Touch_of_Grey\">Touch of Grey<\/a>&#8220;, Grateful Dead remained among the highest-grossing American touring acts for decades. They gained a committed fanbase by word of mouth and through the free exchange of their live recordings, encouraged by the band&#8217;s allowance of <a title=\"Taper (concert)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taper_(concert)\">taping<\/a>. In 2024, they broke the record for most top-40 albums on the <a title=\"Billboard 200\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_200\"><i>Billboard<\/i> 200<\/a> chart. <i><a title=\"Rolling Stone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_Stone\">Rolling Stone<\/a><\/i> named Grateful Dead number 57 on its 2011 list of the &#8220;<a title=\"Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_Stone%27s_100_Greatest_Artists_of_All_Time\">100 Greatest Artists of all Time<\/a>&#8220;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-rollstone_18-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grateful_Dead#cite_note-rollstone-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup> The band was inducted into the <a title=\"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame\">Rock and Roll Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1994 and a recording of their <a title=\"Cornell 5\/8\/77\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornell_5\/8\/77\">May 8, 1977 performance<\/a> at <a title=\"Cornell University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornell_University\">Cornell University<\/a>&#8216;s <a title=\"Barton Hall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barton_Hall\">Barton Hall<\/a> was added to the <a title=\"National Recording Registry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Recording_Registry\">National Recording Registry<\/a> of the <a title=\"Library of Congress\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Library_of_Congress\">Library of Congress<\/a> in 2012.<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California.
