His mother Ruth Powell was a school teacher and did not know of his father. It is noted that his mother was a frequent visitor to downtown clubs and would have Powell accompany her as a child. He grew up in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greenwich_Village\"><u>Greenwich Village<\/u><\/a>\u00a0while spending two years between 1973 and 1975 living in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_West_Side\"><u>Upper West Side<\/u><\/a>. Powell attended <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PS41\"><u>PS41<\/u><\/a>\u00a0with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rachael_Horovitz\"><u>Rachael Horovitz<\/u><\/a>, sister to Adam Horovitz, later known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ad-Rock\"><u>Ad-Rock<\/u><\/a>\u00a0of the Beastie Boys.<\/p>\n<p>Powell graduated with an AA in Liberal Arts from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LaGuardia_Community_College\"><u>LaGuardia Community College<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and a B.S. in Physical Education from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hunter_College\"><u>Hunter College<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Powell started out by selling lemon ices in the streets of New York after graduating from college. During this time he picked up photography as a hobby, taking pictures of friends and family.\u00a0In an admission to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Yorker\"><em><u><i>The New Yorker<\/i><\/u><\/em><\/a>, he would credit an unpleasant experience with a girlfriend in 1985, for him to take up photography as a serious vocation. During this time he would photograph artists including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Michel_Basquiat\"><u>Jean-Michel Basquiat<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andy_Warhol\"><u>Andy Warhol<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in the streets of New York.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1986, Powell quit his job and tagged along with Beastie Boys on their Run-DMC&#8217;s Raising Hell tour. Some of the photographs that he took while on tour became significant, and Powell gained fame, becoming the unofficial &#8220;fourth Beastie Boy&#8221;. He toured with the group as Def Jam Records&#8217; de facto in-house photographer on their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Licensed_to_Ill\"><u>Licensed to Ill<\/u><\/a>\u00a0tour in 1987 and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Together_Forever:_Greatest_Hits_1983%E2%80%931991\"><u>Together Forever: Greatest Hits 1983\u20131991<\/u><\/a>\u00a0tour with Run DMC and then again in 1992 on their <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Check_Your_Head\"><u>Check Your Head<\/u><\/a>\u00a0tour and the 1994 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lollapalooza\"><u>Lollapalooza<\/u><\/a>. Powell is famous for being featured in the song &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Car_Thief\"><u>Car Thief<\/u><\/a>&#8221; on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul's_Boutique\"><em><u><i>Paul&#8217;s Boutique<\/i><\/u><\/em><\/a>\u00a0album, with the lyrics: &#8220;Homeboy throw in the towel, Your girl got dicked by Ricky Powell.&#8221; After being by the group&#8217;s side for over a decade, he separated in 1995 as the group was changing their style moving away from a rowdy tenor from their early days. Powell would say in a documentary that the group matured, while he continued to remain his old self.<\/p>\n<p>Powell maintained a positive relationship with the Beastie Boys, including photographing them for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interview_(magazine)\"><em><u><i>Interview<\/i><\/u><\/em><u>\u00a0magazine<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in 2011<\/p>\n<p>Powell was the host of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Public-access_television\"><u>public-access television<\/u><\/a>\u00a0show, <em><i>Rappin&#8217; With the Rickster<\/i><\/em>\u00a0from 1990 to 1996, In the show, he interviewed stars including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russell_Simmons\"><u>Russell Simmons<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doug_E_Fresh\"><u>Doug E Fresh<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Hunter\"><u>Harold Hunter<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kool_Keith\"><u>Kool Keith<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rahzel\"><u>Rahzel<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laurence_Fishburne\"><u>Laurence Fishburne<\/u><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cypress_Hill\"><u>Cypress Hill<\/u><\/a>. He became the face of New York&#8217;s downtown party scene, connected to both musical and visual artists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonic_Youth\"><u>Sonic Youth<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Michel_Basquiat\"><u>Jean-Michel Basquiat<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russell_Simmons\"><u>Russell Simmons<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Hunter\"><u>Harold Hunter<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dondi_White\"><u>Dondi White<\/u><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sofia_Coppola\"><u>Sofia Coppola<\/u><\/a>. He gave insights into the artistic phenomena of the day, with a combination of candid footage, impromptu interviews, and a vision of Powell&#8217;s New York. Powell considered the show &#8220;a time capsule of someone growing up in Manhattan during that era and being around the music scene&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A DVD of <em><i>Rappin&#8217; With the Rickster<\/i><\/em>, released in 2010, was declared a must-have by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juxtapoz\"><em><u><i>Juxtapoz<\/i><\/u><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s works were featured both domestically and internationally in a solo and group exhibitions. <em><i>Frozade Moments, 1985\u20132003<\/i><\/em>\u00a0ran at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Adler\"><u>Bill Adler<\/u><\/a>&#8216;s Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery in New York from July through September 2003. <em><i>Public Access: Ricky Powell Photographs 1985\u20132005<\/i><\/em>\u00a0exhibition was featured at the colette in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\"><u>Paris<\/u><\/a>, the powerHouse Gallery in New York, Milk Bar in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Francisco\"><u>San Francisco<\/u><\/a>, and Lab 101 Gallery in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\"><u>Los Angeles<\/u><\/a>. His photographs and his signature street style at BRAVE Art, Whistler in 2006. <em><i>The Ricky Powell Art Funk Explosion!<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was Presented at Sacred Gallery NYC in December 2010, and celebrated Powell&#8217;s guest curation of Frank Chapter 43: Bug Out!, which highlights his photographs and interviews with renowned street artists. His slideshow at New York&#8217;s All Tomorrow&#8217;s Parties music festival was highlighted by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_(magazine)\"><em><u><i>Billboard<\/i><\/u><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s hip hop images (along with works by artists <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Janette_Beckman\"><u>Janette Beckman<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barron_Claiborne\"><u>Barron Claiborne<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Danny_Clinch\"><u>Danny Clinch<\/u><\/a>, appeared in the best-selling collective photography book <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contact_High:_A_Visual_History_of_Hip-Hop\"><u>Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(written\/curated by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vikki_Tobak\"><u>Vikki Tobak<\/u><\/a>) and its subsequent series of large scale traveling group exhibitions which has included <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Annenberg_Space_for_Photography\"><u>The Annenberg Space for Photography<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(Los Angeles), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Center_of_Photography\"><u>International Center of Photography<\/u><\/a>\u00a0(New York) and Abu Dahbi at Manarat Al Saadiyat (United Arab Emirates).<\/p>\n<p>His photographs focused on New Yorkers. Powell considered the relationship between the photographer and the photograph to be &#8220;a chemical connection of some sort&#8221;. As the intrinsic qualities of the photograph changed after Powell began capturing moments, so did the subjects; later in life, he was more likely to &#8220;photograph strangers in his Greenwich Village neighborhood than multi platinum hip-hop acts and Downtown art stars&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Powell died on February 1, 2021.
